Merritt Decorators

Steve Merritt of Merritt decorators is a South Coast based Painting Contractor, that carries out all types of painting and decorating from refurbishment works to new build houses and commercial.

I sat down with Steve to talk about his very successful decorating business and why he chose HANDS HQ as a new way to create his risk assessments and method statements.

Hi Steve, thanks for taking the time out to talk with us. Could you start by telling us a bit about your company and how you got in the industry?

Merritt decorators have been established since 1985 and growing consistently year on year, even through the recession, to provide top quality painters and decorators for all types of painting and decorating jobs. We specialise in all aspects of painting and decorating including commercial wide vinyl paperhanging, high quality paperhanging, multi colour spraying, airless spraying, cradle work, exterior protection, industrial painting, water damage repairs and insurance work.

We carry out work for many large contractors and currently working on a project for 130 new build houses at Henfield, a large 96 bedroom MOD project in Warminster for which we have just won a quality award with Aspire. We are refurbishing 7 branches of Sparesbase and completed 7 Pavilion Accommodation blocks for a private college at West Meon and have just been awarded the painting to 32 new build top end houses at Rowlands Castle.

“Your system has so far delivered over and above in terms of simplicity and ease”

Sounds busy! So could you tell me what problems your growing business was facing with health and safety before signing up to HANDS HQ?

I was looking for an easier way to do my risk assessments an method statements. Depending on the sizes of jobs, I can sometimes have a handful or a couple dozen guys working on different jobs across the UK and principal contractors having differing requests all jobs for us to comply with. Your system allows me to easily track projects in a dashboard, edit as and when needed and send off to my clients in a matter of minutes.

Did you have a concern about signing up?

I was concerned whether you’d have all the required information for our business but those concerns were alleviated once we started using your application. I do remember one occasion where we required more info on young workers implemented into the risk assessment, we called up and asked for further detail and your team immediately added it to the system. Your customer was service exceptional.

Thanks Steve.  So what benefits are you getting from using HANDS HQ over your existing systems?

Over the years I’ve compiled and collected lots of risk assessments and method statements that I used to normally adapt for each site and as legislation changes.  Your system has so far delivered over and above in terms of simplicity and ease, I can create site specific documents in a fraction of the time that get me access to some of the largest main contracting sites in the UK.

So what is your favourite feature of our online application?

The simplicity and speed.

Would you recommend HANDS HQ? If so, why?

Its exceptional for new trade businesses entering the construction industry. Growing businesses need a place to start to get all this information in hand, HANDS HQ delivers on this exceptionally well. I also recommend it to existing businesses who are looking for a way to slash the time and costs currently used on health and safety administration.

Thanks for taking some time out to talk with us today Steve.

No problem, thank you.
